About Chaser Bins
Chaser bins, sometimes referred to as “grain carts” or “grain auger wagons,” are tractor-towed carts designed to work side-by-side with a combine, carrying away as many as 2,000 or more bushels of grain at a time so the combine doesn’t need to stop harvesting in order to unload. They may be equipped with standard tyres or flotation tyres or even tracks that are better-suited to operating in soft field conditions with minimal ground disturbance.
Although they serve the same basic purpose as a gravity wagon, which is to transport the crop, chaser bins have auger systems that enable them to unload grain directly into a grain truck, whereas gravity wagons have an unloading door on their undersides and, as their name implies, use gravity to aid in offloading their cargo.

Key Benefits
The key advantage of using one or more chaser bins during the harvesting process is that the tractor and wagon can stay right alongside the combine and take on grain directly from the combine’s grain tank. Then, once the chaser bin is full, the tractor can head over to a truck, trailer, or storage unit, unload the grain from the bin, and then head back over to the combine before its grain tank fills up again.
For larger operations, using multiple chaser bins with the proper team synchronization allows a combine to stay in almost constant motion, considerably improving harvest efficiency and saving growers time and money.
Features & Capacity
Aside from the basic features all chaser bins share, mechanical and/or electronic technological advancements tend to set these units apart. Examples include computer balancing, directional downspouts, the inclusion of a second auger or a front-located and adjustable auger, electronic tarp systems, hydraulic doors, integrated weighing systems, remote downspout control, and even cameras and sensors to monitor the unloading process.
Capacity is also a big differentiator, as some chaser bins may only hold around 200 or 250 bushels, or 7,000 to 9,000 litres. Compare that to the 2,500-bu (88,000-L) capacity of the Brent Avalanche Model 2596, a massive track-equipped grain cart with an empty weight of 17,1000 kilograms (37,680 pounds) that requires a four-wheel-drive tractor rated for at least 500 horsepower (368 kilowatts) to pull it.
Popular Examples
The J&M 875-18 is part of the manufacturer’s larger 875 lineup. It weighs 4,173 kg (9,200 lbs) and has a steel, 875-bu (30,800-L) hopper with and one vertical auger that’s 46 centimetres (18 inches) in diameter. According J&M, it has an unload time of roughly two minutes, depending on crop moisture content.
The Brent Avalanche 2096 is a dual-auger grain cart with a maximum capacity of 2,000 bu (70,500 L) that can be equipped either with 107-cm (42-in.) Equalizer tracks or with steerable tandem axles and flotation tyres. It also has a 1,000-bushel-per-minute unloading speed, thanks to its 61-cm (24-in.) vertical auger and 51-cm (20-in.) horizontal auger.
